Ticket to Read
Ticket to Read meets students where they are both academically and geographically. Adult learners complete a basic literacy assessment before joining the Ticket to Read class that will best meet their learning needs. Classes are small with up to 14 students, and the classes are supported by a team of volunteer tutors and a qualified staff instructor. Classes typically meet for three hours a week on a variety of days, times, and locations throughout the metro. Our class levels vary in approach in order to hone in on each individual student’s needs.
Adult Basic Education (A&B Level Classes)
The Adult Basic Education Ticket to Read classes help emerging reader solidify their ability to sound out and break down words. Using the Pathways to Reading curriculum, Adult Basic Education students gain the foundational skills required for reading success. Students also work on specific life goals, read relevant stories, and begin developing spelling and writing skills.
Pre-HiSET (C&D Level Classes)
The Pre-HiSET Ticket to Read classes are for any adult seeking a high school equivalency, improved reading skills, or for teens and adults who want to build study skills in a safe, tuition free environment before launching into college. Pre-HiSET Ticket to Read students can be found reading and discussing books, writing research papers, or working on Reading Plus, an online software program that helps students increase their reading speed and accuracy while building vocabulary.
Career Online High School
Career Online High School is an exciting program that allows students to earn an accredited high school diploma with an attached career certificate. Kansas City Public Library, Mid-Continent Public Library, and Literacy KC joined together to bring this program to the metro in January 2016, and the demand and community response has been overwhelming. Now even the busiest of students can obtain a high school diploma with the convenient any-time, any-where web learning platform and additional support from an academic coach.
Digital Literacy
At Literacy KC, we believe in the multifaceted nature of literacy, including digital literacy. All Ticket to Read students complete a Digital Life Skills class where students review the basics of computers, learn new skills, and become familiar and comfortable with using our onsite community computer lab. Digital Literacy instruction is embedded all of our programs, from Let’s Read parents downloading free educational apps for their children to math students using Khan Academy, we reach beyond the traditional pen and paper instruction methods. Literacy KC is pleased to host a Digital Inclusion Fellow who works both inside our walls and out in the community to ensure access, devices, and digital training for all.
Let’s Read Family Reading Program
Let’s Read is a multi-generational approach to family reading. Built to inspire a tradition of reading in the home, Let’s Read offers an action packed hour each week for caregivers and children to laugh, read, and play together. Each session centers on a weekly theme and includes age appropriate books, crafts, and reading tips. At the end of each session, families leave with a brand new book, strategies for reading in the home, and great memories!
This program is ideal for schools, housing developments, neighborhood groups, or any organization invested in seeing parents and children shout, “Let’s Read!”
Math
Math tutoring is available to individuals who are currently enrolled in literacy classes. Math tutoring sessions are student directed and cover a variety of math skills including basic math, consumer math, and HiSET prep. Math tutoring sessions are conveniently scheduled before and after Adult Basic Education and Pre-HiSET classes.
Writers for Readers
Writers for Readers is a collaborative partnership between Literacy KC and UMKC’s Creative Writing Program. This innovative program employs a creative writing graduate student to create, implement, and teach writing to teens and adults enrolled in Literacy KC classes.
