Albert joined Literacy KC in Fall 2016. When he was enrolling in classes, he told his registrar that he did not have any interest in learning about computers. Eight weeks later, Albert has worked on numerous digital lessons, learning websites, and received instruction in the classroom. Our assisted computer lab staff hours have allowed for him to increase his typing skills and send an email for the first time! Albert’s new skills and interest in improving his digital literacy has resulted in him becoming a proud owner of his own personal laptop.
When asked about his digital experiences, Albert said: “Thanks to Ms. Sarah and the helpers in the lab for showing me how to improve my typing, I can find videos of Chiefs games and work on my skills. I come here every day before class to get help on the computer, even on days I don’t have class. It gives me something to do.”
Literacy KC is proud of Albert and all of his accomplishments as we work to improve the digital literacy skills of all our students. These skills are a crucial component of adult literacy and society as a whole. We are grateful for our partnership with Connecting for Good, another Kansas City nonprofit, that has helped us get over 20 students access to discounted, refurbished computers in 2016. Our organizations acknowledge that adults must possess the digital skills to function in a technology-driven society. Coupling these skills with proper access to devices, internet, and training in the 21st Century gives our students the ability to perform various tasks that range from sending emails and paying bills online to reading news articles and applying for jobs.
