Volunteer tutors play a vital role in supporting adult learners as they build reading, writing, math, and English skills. Tutors are onboarded once per term, and before you start, you’ll complete:
- Volunteer Orientation
- Application & Background Check Paperwork
- Tutor Training
- Classroom Shadowing
What Tutors Do
As a tutor, you’ll support students in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learning (ELL) classes by:
- Assisting with reading, writing, and conversation practice
- Guiding online learning activities
- Offering encouragement and emotional support
- Helping instructors and participants build literacy, math, and digital skills
Requirements
- Be 18 or older
- Pass a background check
- Have reliable transportation
- Be respectful, patient, and supportive in a classroom environment
Time Commitment: 3–9 hours per week for an entire term
Training: Volunteer Orientation and Tutor Training (required before starting)
