Become a Tutor

We’re so glad you’re interested in becoming a tutor with Literacy KC!

Volunteer tutors play a vital role in supporting adult learners as they build reading, writing, math, and English skills. Tutors are onboarded once per term, and before you start, you’ll complete:

  • Volunteer Orientation
  • Application & Background Check Paperwork
  • Tutor Training
  • Classroom Shadowing

What Tutors Do

As a tutor, you’ll support students in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learning (ELL) classes by:

  • Assisting with reading, writing, and conversation practice
  • Guiding online learning activities
  • Offering encouragement and emotional support
  • Helping instructors and participants build literacy, math, and digital skills

Requirements

  • Be 18 or older
  • Pass a background check
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Be respectful, patient, and supportive in a classroom environment

Time Commitment: 3–9 hours per week for an entire term
Training: Volunteer Orientation and Tutor Training (required before starting)

After orientation you will be asked to complete our volunteer application and a fingerprinting background check.

Once you’ve passed the application process, then you will be ready to start changing lives beyond words!
