Meet the Literacy KC Board of Directors

Literacy KC currently has a group of 15 active and dedicated members on our Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for steering the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as making sure we have adequate resources to advance our mission of literacy for all. They perform a multitude of activities ranging from serving on sub-committees, fundraising, marketing, and offering to use their expertise in their professional careers in any way possible. This week’s blog provides the opportunity to get to know some of our board members on a personal level, as we showcase interesting facts about them that you may not know!

Our board is a diverse set of individuals that bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise to Literacy KC. Their professional careers range from law, banking, marketing, and more: we rely on their experience for advice on how to best run Literacy KC. In an effort to get to know them better, we asked them the following questions:

  1. Why did you get involved with Literacy KC?

“I got involved with Literacy KC because it was an opportunity to support literacy services for all” –Ed

“Listening to a student at Literacy KC describe her struggles with reading moved me to become an advocate for those with similar needs” –Eric

“I enjoy volunteering and consider literacy to be a basic human right that it is essential to navigating the modern world” -Paul

  1. What is your favorite book?

“I always have trouble narrowing down from 100 favorites. Possibly Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez”- Judy

“I don’t have a single favorite. I recently appreciated Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal. –James

“Harry Potter (All of them) –Spenser

  1. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself!

“I have two birthdays! I was born at home and my birth certificate is incorrect–a day after I celebrate my “real” birthday. Rather than try to change it, I just live with it and now have an excuse to celebrate my birthday both days.” –Claire

“My daughter is able to speak 3 language” -Rekha

“I’m a fifth generation Kansas farmer” -Alleen

  1. What else should we know about you? Do you have any great ideas or hidden talents?

“I am a big soccer fan. I was able to attend the World Cup in 2014” –DJ

“The true richness of our work at Literacy KC can be found deep within the struggles and achievements of our students. I’m simply honored to play a part in unearthing these stories to help bring out the empathy within all of us.” -Eric
