Volunteer Spotlight: Morgan Rehberg

Morgan has been volunteering at Literacy KC for two and a half years and teaches math every week. She is also known among staff to help wherever else she is needed–from special events to testing center dates. After attending college in Chicago, Morgan moved to the Kansas City area to start her career with The Dairy Farmers of America, where she helps dairy farmers manage their price risks. She loves Kansas City and mentioned that this fondness has been enhanced by her volunteer experiences: “Volunteering is such an important way to connect with the community…coming to Literacy KC is my favorite part of the week,” she explained.

Morgan enjoys volunteering at Literacy KC because of the wonderful students. “I can’t tell you how much I admire people who see value in education, and especially those people who are revisiting it later in life. They’re extremely motivated and goal-driven… and I’m happy to share my love of math with them.” Morgan‘s favorite memory of tutoring math was with one such student, who “was working toward a job related task, and she didn’t pass it the first time but she did the second time, and we worked really hard to achieve that…it was rewarding to see that translate into a job opportunity and someone’s happiness.”

And happiness is the theme of one of Morgan‘s favorite books, The Happiness Hypothesis, by Jonathan Haidt. “The book explores research on happiness, and I love anything that helps you understand the positive aspects of life.”

Thank you for all you do to support Literacy KC and our students, Morgan! We are so grateful to have you on our team of wonderful volunteers.
